The prestigious international recognition assigned by the Fee (Foundation for Environmental Education) to the 9 most beautiful beaches, certifies the environmental quality not only for the sea waters, but also for the services, green spaces, as well as the parameters of livability and of sustainability towards tourists.

The province of Cosenza has many blue flag locations.

Among these, the splendid Praia a Mare, awarded the Blue Flag for three kilometers of coastline, from Camping Internazionale to Punta Fiuzzi, located in front of the suggestive Dino Island.
Not far from the beach you can visit the ancient Tower of Fiuzzi, built over the stack of the same name during the sixteenth century.

Another jewel of the Tyrrhenian coast of Cosenza is San Nicola Arcella.

Capo Vaticano: a rare pearl between the two gulfs!

Capo Vaticano is one of the most interesting Italian coastal reliefs and one of the most touristic seaside resorts in Calabria.

It overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the province of Vibo Valentia .. a pearl of rare beauty, between the two gulfs of Sant’Eufemia and Gioia Tauro. It is only 10 km away. about from the suggestive and wonderful Tropea.

A promontory to take your breath away.

From its height, the view can sweep up to the Aeolian Islands and the Strait of Messina, on clear days.

In ancient times it was known with the name of “Taurianum Promontorium”, which later became “Vatican Promontory”.

Capo Vaticano: its magic is already all in the name that derives from the Latin Vaticinium, which means oracle, response and which recalls the legend according to which the extreme tip of the promontory was inhabited by the prophetess Manto.

She lived in a cave among the cliffs of the Cape, right in front of a rock that took the name of “Scoglio Mantineo” from her.

And, not surprisingly, Mantineo derives from the Greek “mantéuo” which means giving responses and reminds us of the origins of this ancient myth.

According to what is said, the sailors coming from the North addressed the prophetess, before crossing the whirlpools between Scilla and Cariddi.

While those who came from the south asked about the people they would meet sailing north. And, according to the legend, Ulysses seems to have asked the prophetess Manto, the auspices to continue his journey.

Today, Capo Vaticano is a geographical point .. where the Lighthouse of the Navy stands, which with its light indicates the route to follow to sailors.

Beautiful beaches include “Le Grotticelle”, “Riaci”, “Praia I Focu”, but the most suggestive is that of “Torre Ruffa”, linked to the legendary story of Donna Canfora, a beautiful and faithful widow, who was kidnapped by the Saracens thrown into the sea from the ship, preferring death to dishonor.

For this reason, the sea changes its color every hour, taking on different shades of blue, such as the color of the veil that encircled her head … and the waves that break on the shore, recall the poignant lament, when every night, in the semblance of a ghost, greets his beloved and beloved land.

This enchanting promontory is like a luxuriant garden that extends towards the sea, embracing the opposite Aeolian Islands.

And .. late .. when the fiery ball of the Sun is swallowed by the jaws of the Stromboli volcano, bewitching explode .. poignant and unforgettable sunsets.

Only from Calabria, from this wonderful stretch of “Costa degli Dei”, can you enjoy this natural phenomenon.

San Michele Arcangelo in Vibo Valentia and the days of Fai

The church of San Michele in Vibo Valentia, also known as the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, is one of the most beautiful examples.

A precious example of Renaissance architecture throughout the southern part of the Italian peninsula, which stands out for its elegance and the presence of very delicate ornaments.

It was built in 1519 based on the project of a Sienese architect, Baldassarre Peruzzi. Its original design was heavily revised after the earthquake occurred at the end of the 18th century.

The interior of the Church of San Michele, which was elevated to a parish on August 8, 1519 by the Bishop of Mileto, Andrea Della Valle, has a single nave and is enriched with excellent bas-reliefs.

At the end of the nave you can admire the apse which clearly shows the typical taste of the Baroque period. Inside it is possible to see a painting by Luca Giordano depicting Saint Michael chasing Lucifer away.

Among other things, the valuable artistic decorations on the entrance portal on the main facade, with Ionic pillars, stand out. The bell tower also deserves some photographic shots, characterized by a square section and three overlapping orders.

Today it is devoid of the spire following the earthquake of 1783. The bell tower had a clock whose mechanism was found on the spot and today preserved in the museum. Furthermore, some important paintings dating back to the thirteenth century were kept in the Church of San Michele Arcangelo.

A remarkable artistic heritage that today can still be admired inside the church of San Giuseppe and which consists of two paintings by Ruby depicting “The Communion of Christ” and the “Madonna and Child,

Then there are also “The Deposition” and “The Annunciation” by Zoda. A valuable canvas by “S. Gaetano ”work that bears the signature of Curatoli. A precious 17th century painting depicting Giordano’s “Fall of the Angels”.

According to some testimonies, a crypt remains of the ancient structure of the church prior to the one built in 1559, located under the floor and accessible from an entrance outside the church. It is likely that the crypt was built in the Norman period or in the era of the Angevins.

According to the hypotheses of scholars, the crypt of the church of San Michele was built in conjunction with a small place of worship, known as San Michele il Vecchio, which was destroyed to allow the construction of the current church.

The crypt in the shape of a Latin cross is made up of narrow passages and small rooms.

This is managed by the municipality of Vibo as a museum space in the city. Inside it is possible to admire works of ancient sacred art such as tabernacles, statues, sculptures, lanterns and other objects found inside.

Equally suggestive and probably the pride of this museum in Calabria are the sarcophagus, found and kept inside the ossuary, known to many as the ossuary of Vibo Valentia.
